Doran Johnson is in his twenty-fourth year of teaching choral music. For the past fourteen years, he has been the choral director at Westside High School in Omaha, Nebraska. His responsibilities at Westside include directing the Warrior Choir, Freshman Choir, The Amazing Technicolor Show Choir, Warrior Express and teaching voice. Under his leadership, Westside ensembles have developed a national reputation, earning top honors at many prestigious events. The Warrior Choir has performed with the Omaha Symphony on several occasions and has been awarded superior ratings at the District Music Contest. The Amazing Technicolor Show Choir has been a consistent finalist at competitive events across the country and has garnered many Best Vocals trophies. In 2009, they were the Grand Champions of the Showstoppers National Show Choir Invitational. In March of 2011, they were named Grand Champions at FAME Orlando. Mr. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master of Music degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Johnson has served as the Show Choir Repertoire and Standards Chair for the North Central Division of the American Choral Directors Association and is the District Music Contest Coordinator for District 2 of the Nebraska School Activities Association. He currently serves as Chair of Choral Affairs for the Nebraska Music Educators Association and is on the Editorial Board of the Student and Youth Travel Association magazine. In 2005, he was awarded the H. Vaughn Phelps Excellence in Teaching Award by the Westside Community Schools and in 2008 was the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Schrager Foundation. Mr. Johnson was recently presented the BRAVO Award from the Westside Foundation, in recognition of his tireless efforts on behalf of Westside Schools. He has been married to his wife, Jolon, for twenty-five years and is proud of his two children, Jordan, currently a senior at UNL and Jaylee, an eighth grader. |
